Using recycled ground glass as a raw material not only makes for striking artistic effects, but it is environmentally friendly. The technique not only provides a use for waste glass; but also ceramics containing glass can be fired at much lower temperatures than pure clay, resulting in a substantial savings in fuel. The process described here uses a mixture of 25% clay together with 75% recycled glass, and it can be fired and quickly cooled in just eight hours.

To begin with you need a source of crushed glass, and a ceramic or glass kiln. If you are near an area where there is a glass recycler who has a glass crusher, then you are in luck. Some communities which are located far from container manufacturers have their own glass-crushing machinery. The glass doesn't necessarily have to be absolutely clean, but it is important that the crushed glass includes very fine particles - dust size - since the strength of the final product depends upon particulate size. Various clays can be used, such as Redart and Plastic Vitrox. Molds for forming tiles can be made from one-by-two boards with removable bottoms; and a screen material at the bottom to help release the tile from the mold. Brush the sides of the mold with a solution of one part whiting to two parts water, so that the tile doesn't cling to the sides of the mold. Place a piece of mosquito netting cut exactly to fit the bottom in the bottom of the mold, to ease the release of the tile.

Self-glazing is promoted by a solution of one part soda ash to ten parts water. Place three parts of crushed glass together with one part of dry clay in a mixing bowl. Add enough of the soda ash solution (roughly one fourth as much solution as glass-clay mix) to the dry ingredients so that the resulting mixture holds its form when left still, but begins to disassociate when it is shaken. Because glass does not absorb water, it drains quickly through the tile to the bottom carrying dissolved sodium to what will be the surface of the tile; so the tiles are actually self-glazing. Pour the glass-clay mix into the mold, patting down and shaking it in the corners. Smooth the upper surface with a putty knife. Leave the tile mold on a 200 degree F warming table for an hour (or in the sun if you don't have a warming table) until any water on top of the tile has evaporated. The tile should pull away from the sides of the mold as it dries.

Dismantle the sides of the mold from the tile, and flip it over to remove the base. When thoroughly dry, brush the top of the tile with some 10% soda ash solution. Place the tile on the kiln brick shelf (tiles need to be on a shelf since they are too soft to support themselves during firing). Then, fire quickly up to 250 degrees F and hold it for fifteen minutes; then increase to 1000 degrees F and hold it for fifteen minutes; then increase to 1760 degrees F and hold it for fifteen minutes more. Cool the tiles down normally. This process takes about an hour and three quarters; but a slower kiln can do the job as well using the same temperature levels.

Best Exercises For Pear Shaped Women

Being a pear shaped woman myself, I know the struggles involved in trying to achieve a lean and sleek pair of legs. There are a few things I have learned about how to exercise effectively for maximum fat loss in the lower region and balancing out our physiques.

For starters, there are a few things we must accept so that we won't beat ourselves up with frustration.

1. Accept the fact that you have a pear shape - we carry most of our body fat in the lower half of our bodies (hips, thighs and butt).

2. Consider the fat on your lower region as fat magnets. In other words, it is very easy to attract fat to the thighs, hips and buttocks and very difficult to move (not impossible though!)

3. Accept the fact that you will have to work extra hard to lean out the lower half of your body.

If you can accept the above, then you'll be armed with a more realistic mindset when working out and trying to lose fat. You'll be able to be patient with yourself and won't give up.

Now the good news!

1. It IS possible to lean out the hips, thighs and buttock areas.

2. It IS possible to achieve a great pair of legs.

3. You can balance out your upper body so that you are well proportioned and symmetrical.

So how do we go about leaning out our lower bodies and balancing out our upper bodies?

First, you will have to eat very clean and watch your fat intake.

Stick with fruits, veggies, tuna, tilapia, chicken, lean meats and egg whites.

Eat more of the green types of veggies and lots of salads.

Eat starchy veggies (potatoes, rice, pastas etc...) in moderation.

Drink lots of water.

When eating fruits, try to eat them in the morning, before your workouts.

Try not to eat fruits after 2pm.

Best fruits: all kinds of berries, grapefruit, apples.

Best veggies: brocolli, green beans, asparagus, green, onions, garlic, red, yellow, orange peppers, spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce.

Rules:

Never fry your food.

Grill, boil, steam, bake or pan fry with Pam Spray, never in a pan of oil.

If you're going to have a cheat day, make sure do it early enough so you can burn it off.

Never have a cheat day at night.

Try (if you can!) to only cheat twice a month.

What is a cheat day: ONE cheat meal only! Not a whole day of cheating!

Did I say drink lots and lots of water too?

Ok, so now if you eat this way, you will start noticing yourself getting leaner. You'll be shedding some fat off of your overall body. Yes, your lower body too! Your pants and skirts won't fit anymore. So you'll have to buy a new wardrobe!

But this is not the whole story. In order to create those great lean legs, you will have to exercise differently than your friends and those women in the magazines.

We want to lean out our lower halves and build up our upper halves.

We have special needs, so we must exercise specifically, to meet this need.

From my experience, pear shaped women need to focus on moderate weights with very high volume repetitions in the lower half of their bodies, incorporating lots of cardio workouts too.

The upper half of our bodies need a different plan all together.

To get that symetrical and balanced look, we need to lift heavy weights so that we are widening our shoulders and backs and creating those sexy arms. Don't fear lifting heavy. We will never get big. And if it's any comfort to you (or maybe not!), our bodies are the most difficult of all body types to gain muscle.

I know, I know, but we can still get that lean, defined, sexy and well proportioned body we're seeking.

So this is the plan I use and seems to be working very well. Yes, I am seeing RESULTS. It will take time, but if you are completely determined, patient and focused on your goal, you will achieve that sexy, well proportioned and symetrical body that screams out, "WOW"!

Here's the work out plan that I am currently using:

Lower body 3 times per week.

Upper body twice per week.

Cardio 4 - 5 times per week.

Lower body workout:

Incorporate a variety of leg exercises such as lunges, squats, butt blaster, leg presses, leg extensions, hip exercises, leg extensions and hamstring curls.

You can choose 3 - 4 excersizes three times per week.

Example:

Day 1: squats, lunges, leg presses, calves, cardio

Five sets each of 35 + repetitions with moderate weight

Rest 30 - 45 seconds between sets

Day 2: Upper Body, cardio, abs

Day 3: leg extensions, hamstring curls, butt blaster

Five sets each of 35 + repetitions with moderate weight

Rest 30 - 45 seconds between sets

Day 4: Upper Body, cardio, abs

Day 5: walking lunges, side walking lunges, steady lunges

Five sets each of 35 + repetitions with moderate weight

Rest 30 - 45 seconds between sets

Day 6: cardio, abs

Don't worry about the sets and reps in the beginning. Do as many as you can. If you can do more than 35, do more.

Cardio: jogging, treadmill, elliptical machine, jumping rope, swimming, cycling, aerobic classes etc... Just make sure you are working out intense enough to really burn the fat.

Upper Body Workout:

I exercize my upper body twice per week:

Full upper body workout: chest, back, shoulders, tri's and bi's, calves

Abs 4 times per week.

I choose 2 - 3 exercises per body part.

3 sets each for 8 - 10 reps.

Weight is heavy.

Rest about 60 seconds in between sets.

That's it. I do cardio 4 - 5 times per week. Upper body twice per week. Lower body three times per week. Abs 3 -4 times per week, calves 3 - 4 times per week.

I find that this intense workout PLUS eating a CLEAN diet, is very effective in leaning out the lower half of our bodies plus balancing out our upper halves.

Make sure you get lots of rest too!

What is strength training?

Strength training is performing exercises with the intention of making your muscles stronger. These exercises generally take the form of performing a movement against a resistance, for example your bodyweight or free weights.

How strength training is different to bodybuilding

Bodybuilding and strength training are often mistakenly thought of as being the same thing because they use similar techniques, but there are some key differences in the training methods, the end results and most importantly, the primary aim. In bodybuilding, there is one goal: aesthetics. The aim is to increase the size, definition and symmetry of muscles to build an impressively muscular physique. Bodybuilders increase in strength as they train, but this is only a side effect of their training. In strength training, the main aim is to increase the strength of the muscles. Strength training will also tend to increase the size of the muscles, but not to anywhere near the same extent as bodybuilding.

Factors affecting strength

In essence, strength is a measure of the ability of a muscle to exert a force against a resistance. Although the size of a muscle is often related to its strength, one does not always follow the other. It is possible to massively increase your strength without gaining much, if any, muscle mass and it is also possible to increase the size of your muscles without gaining much strength. Increasing muscle mass will increase your strength because you will have more muscle fibres to exert a force. However, when you lift a weight, you never actually use all the available muscle fibres at the same time. By learning to increase the number you use, you can increase your strength without increasing your muscle mass. The number of fibres activated in the muscle depends on the signal that they receive from the brain. When training specifically to gain strength, your nervous system will learn to activate a greater proportion of the muscle fibres, which increases your strength.

Training the brain

If you want to get stronger, you need to focus on the nervous system because it is this that has a greater influence on your strength than anything else. Unsurprisingly, the best way to train your nervous system is to lift heavy weights. Increasing your strength is primarily about training the connection between your mind and your muscles. By exerting large forces to lift heavy weights, your nervous system will learn to adapt to them. You need to be lifting weights such that you can only manage between two to five repetitions per set. Any more than this and the weight isn't heavy enough. Training frequency also has a big effect. For maximum strength gains you need to train regularly and often.

Most bodybuilding routines train each body part only once per week to allow the muscles to fully recover. Strength training taxes the muscles in a different way so the recovery period needed is not so long; it is primarily the nervous system that is being trained. You should be aiming to train each body part around twice a week. Strength training workouts should be short, but intense. You should not be training to failure. Training to failure will increase the time needed to recover, which will not help you gain strength. Choosing the right exercises is also important for building strength. The most effective forms of exercise for strength are heavy compound lifts and bodyweight exercises. For example, barbell squats and pull-ups.

Summary

You can build up your muscles all you want, but if you aren't focused on the right exercises, your nervous system won't adapt and you won't get stronger. Strength Training is all in the mind.

Are You Making These 3 Workout Mistakes?

You may be exercising regularly but maybe you are not achieving the results you desire or think you should be achieving for the amount of time you are investing in your exercise routine. Fact is you can have the best of intentions and do a lot of things right in your exercise routine, but you also could be failing to do some very important things that could well impair your overall results.

Here are three of the biggest mistakes that can be made with your exercise program and the solutions on how you can get back on the path to awesome results.

Mistake 1: Not including strength training in your workout - All too often, people gravitate toward cardio type exercise such as walking, jogging, cycling etc and shun strength training. This is particularly true of women, who often avoid strength training because they think they are going to get too bulky or because they don't want to add toned muscle tissue until they reach their ideal body weight. This is a huge mistake.

Without question, strength training is the most important thing you can do for your health, wellness and appearance - hands down, without question, end of story. It improves your posture, shapes your body, increases strength and tones your muscles- things that aerobic type exercise can never ever do.

It is also the best activity for losing excess body fat and maintaining your ideal body weight. Muscle is metabolically active tissue that increases your resting metabolism so you are burning calories throughout the day. If you can put on five pounds of lean muscle tissue - which anyone can do within several months - you can burn in excess of an additional 1,000 calories a week. Cardio type activity only focus's on what calories are burned during the exercise session. Strength training exercise increases the rate you burn fuel every minute permanently. A very big difference.

Mistake 2: Not training with adequate intensity of effort - You now have a strength training program in place, but are you training hard enough to make a difference?

Human nature is to seek pleasure and avoid pain so it is understandable not to enjoy feeling your muscles burn while struggling to finish off those last few repetitions of an exercise. But the fact is, if you aren't struggling, you never ever going to see the results you desire. The idea is to make your body stronger and to do that you have to make it work harder than it has done before.

Those little pink dumbbells are just not going to do the job. In order to bring about a change in your physique you need to tax your muscles. No two ways about it. This means the last few reps of your set need to be difficult, if not impossible, to complete. Only by sufficiently challenging your muscles beyond their present capacity will you set the stage for muscle toning and development. Translation: Lack of intensity (lack of effort) leads to a lack of muscle tone.

Mistake 3: Not having a game plan - When it comes to getting great results from your exercise program it is all about strategy. It is a waste of time showing up at the gym and not knowing what you are going to be doing that day. Walking around aimlessly doing a little of this and a little of that accomplishes very little.

If you need some help hire a fitness professional to set up your program and teach you correct exercise technique. They can also teach you correct exercise intensity so you do not waste time on ineffective exercises or on how you perform them.

The important thing is to know exactly what you are going to do and why before you start each workout. It is a good idea to keep a workout log and monitor your own progress over a period of time. If you implement these strategies you will be able to look forward to getting the maximum results in the minimum amount of time.

Cash For Clunkers - Uncle Daddy Helps Americans Buy Cars

The Obama Administration and your Congress funded the "Cash For Clunkers" stimulus program to spur new car sales. They funded it with $1 Billion dollars. Some group of bureaucrats wrote the rules for the program such that when a person trades in a used vehicle that gets poor mileage, they will receive $4,500 credit for that car.

But, after the first four days of the program's life, Washington announced that the program was so "successful" that it would run out of money...money that was supposed to last 90 days.

This program's rules and fine print are enough for ten negative articles. Rules like disposal of the clunker and filing the required forms are Orwellian. But today let's take the view from 30,000 feet instead of using just the ground-level look.

The five most salient points are:

1. This law is unconstitutional. Nowhere in the Constitution does it authorize Congress to spend money helping citizens to make purchases of anything. The law is clearly treason against the Constitution, and those that voted for it and He who signed the bill into law should be prosecuted for that treason.

2. The stimulus is artificial. It does not come from the needs of consumers, but creates a desire for a new car. I would argue that few of the buyers of new cars under the program actually "needed" a new car. They already had a car. Sure, it might have gotten somewhat poor mileage. But buyers of SUVs don't usually consider mileage in their buying decision. Passenger safety is their number one consideration when buying an SUV. The statistics coming out of the "Cash For Clunkers" program tell us that the most traded vehicle is the SUV, and the most purchased car is the Ford Focus. So, the government is skewing the marketplace to its own desires.

3. My understanding is that the "Clunkers" must be destroyed, not resold. So, a perfectly good automobile is sent to the crusher. Can't be resold, can only be used for some special parts. Stiff fines are assessed for dealers who sell the vehicles instead of crushing them. The circle of stupidity is complete. The economic loss for the clunker is 100%. The most uneducated child in America would instinctively understand that destroying the clunker is bad for business.

4. Destroying the clunkers will remove hundreds of thousands of used cars from the market. It will remove millions of auto parts from the market. Consequently used car and auto parts prices will go up. Lower income people don't buy new cars, they buy used cars (but so do I). They also repair their cars with used auto parts. So, this program hurts the poor.

5. Washington is encouraging debt...again. In the real estate bubble, federal law encouraged...even forced...lenders to lend to those of questionable ability to repay the loans. Washington is doing it again in the Automobile industry. They have created a new bubble, albeit a short term one. The very problem of taking on more debt instead of paying off debt and increasing savings is completely ignored by Washington. Did I say "ignored?" No, Washington has purposefully rejected fiscal responsibility, since it would be hypocritical for them the promote a philosophy they summarily reject.

"Cash For Clunkers" is yet another government program that harms American citizens. All the more reason to secede from the United States of America.
